Breathwork Q&A

What is breathwork?

Breathwork is an active meditation that is used for healing and transformation. It is a powerful modality that allows us to disconnect from the mind, open to the healing powers of the body, and reconnect to the peace and clarity that lives inside of us all.

Breathwork is an umbrella term, meaning it encompasses many different techniques and is used for a wide range of purposes. I practice and facilitate conscious connected breathing.  It also goes by the names circular breathing and transformational breathing.

This style of breathing has been used throughout history for its ability to heal.  It provides healing on an emotional, physical, and spiritual level while nurturing your relationship with your inner-self.

How can breathwork heal mental, emotional, and physical trauma?

Our experiences in life create emotion, and sometimes trauma, but we don't fully move through them.  We carry the emotion around with us, oftentimes completely unaware.  We know we're unhappy or maybe just not completely fulfilled, but we can't figure out why.  Our unresolved emotional experiences and traumas can affect our beliefs and thought patterns.  They manifest themselves into our daily lives, our health, our relationships, and our careers, This can look and feel like stress, resentment, anxiety, and depression, to name a few.  When we hold onto these emotions, they can then also manifest into physical sickness.  The beauty of breathwork is that it has the unique ability to release unresolved emotions, helping you to move past the limiting beliefs and fears you may be holding onto. Your body and your breath have the power to heal those places inside of you that have been ignored, suppressed, and neglected.

How can breathwork help release stress, and connect you with your inner peace?

If that wasn't enough, the process allows you to quiet the mind, aka, The Ego Mind, The Critic, The Chatterbox Mind.  It allows you to tap into your inner self.   Imagine those moments in your life, the places in your life, that have brought you peace and clarity.  I picture sunsets, hiking in the woods, mountain tops.  I draw upon those moments when my mind was completely silent and at ease.  These moments offer a deep internal feeling of knowing and of wholeness.  This is your heart-space.  This is your inner-self, your spirit, your soul.  You can call it whatever you would like, but it's the place inside of you that holds your own personal truths, your peace, your clarity.  It's beyond the conditions of The Ego Mind, The Great Negotiator,  i.e "If this person loves me, I will be happy.  If I have this job, I will be successful.  If I control outcomes, I will be safe." etc.  Breathwork allows you to not only tap into your inner being but to cultivate a relationship with it.

What can I expect from a breathwork session?

The experience is different from person to person, and from session to session.  Breathwork is a practice that will continue to evolve with you on your life's path. Your only job is to come in with an open mind and with the intention of letting go of expectation, control, and outcomes.  Your job is to trust that your body holds the infinite wisdom to heal whatever spaces inside of you that need to be healed.  It's a process of trusting and surrendering to the breath and to presence.  Your body will do the rest!

The session will look like this:

1.) Grounding meditation to draw our awareness to the body and to presence.  We'll set our intention and relax into this space.

2.) We'll begin with the 3-part breathing technique to music or sound, depending on the session.  The breathing will continue between 15-35 minutes.

For the first few songs, the mind might resist.  It's important to know that this will pass. It's also common to feel light-headedness, tingling, and stiffness.  It's all completely normal and it will pass.

It's also normal to have emotional releases which could be in the form of crying or laughter.  The first time I did breathwork I laughed hysterically!  Just think of the emotion, whatever it may be, as energy that needs to be released.  It's the by-product of an experience.  In order to fully move through an experience, the emotion needs to be moved through as well..

It's important to embrace and feel into whatever comes up for you, whether it be physical or emotional. This is part of the healing.

3.) The last portion of the session is the rest phase.  This is where we return to a normal breath and allow integration to take place.  This is where we begin to integrate the energetic shift that just took place.

4.) Grounding meditation to come back into the physical space

After a session, you’ll most likely be in a state of calm and peace.  It's important to move slowly and to be sensitive to your environment and . Give yourself time to adjust to the transformation that took place. Trust that the energetic shift will continue to resonate and have profound impacts on your life.
